Old newspaper font was designed by Fredric W. Goudy in 1896. The general appearance of the letters is condensed, with small ascenders and descenders. This font is often used for headlines and short paragraphs of text.
The first known use of this font was in an article about the 1896 presidential election in the New York Times. Since then, it has been used by many newspapers, including the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.
